  3.     DIED. James Rowe, 51, Army colonel and chief of the Army
  4. division of the Joint U.S. Military Advisory Group that provides
  5. training and logistical support to the Philippine military; after
  6. at least two gunmen ambushed his car; in Quezon City. Philippine
  7. officials blamed the killing on Communist rebels, who oppose U.S.
  8. bases in the country. A highly decorated Viet Nam veteran, Rowe
  9. spent from 1963 to 1968 in a cage as a prisoner of war. He
  10. recounted that ordeal in his 1971 book, Five Years to Freedom.
